Pepe Viyuela - Cántico Espiritual

"Spiritual Canticle"

Pepe Viyuela and Luis Santana perform the brief but extraordinary poetic work of Saint John of the Cross, "Spiritual Canticle," an absolute pinnacle of mystical and amorous poetry in the Spanish language, in an extraordinary recital with original compositions by maestro Víctor Carbajo and accompanied on the cello by María Igual Devesa.

The poems are accompanied by the original music composed for this project that makes visible the different dimensions (linguistic, classical, biblical, traditional, erotic, moral, mystical) contained in these magnificent compositions. His poetry is an opening to an encounter with one who was, without a doubt, exceptionally wise, and who knew, through experience, the possibility of making God.

His work is considered one of the peaks of Spanish mysticism: "Of all the men who have used the Spanish language for the purposes of poetry, Saint John of the Cross is the greatest," said Jorge Luis Borges. "Poetry is the voice of the ineffable. Few poets have been given that voice. In Spain, Saint John of the Cross had it," affirmed Juan Ramón Jiménez.
