María Galiana - Eterno Federico

Eternal Federico

María Galiana brings us, along with baritone Luis Santana and flamenco dancer Almudena Roca, this beautiful show in homage to one of the greatest poets in the history of universal literature.

The proposal brings the figure of Lorca to the audience, his death and anecdotes from his life, accompanied by images projected during the show where Santana lends his voice to the 16 popular songs collected and harmonized by our Eternal Federico between the late 1920s and mid-1930s. Ian Gibson has been involved in the selection of songs and texts and may optionally participate in the recital.

This show features for the first time three pieces that have not been heard before. The compositions that the audience will be able to hear for the first time correspond to Mariana Pineda, a children's ring-around-a-rosy song harmonized by Federico in a very simple way; Canción de otoño en Castilla, a sad work, with the melancholy of autumn, which he collected during his time in Burgos in 1934; and Duérmete niñito mío, a very gypsy lullaby, a score provided by Hispanist Ian Gibson, while the other two were in the Federico García Lorca Foundation.

The thread running through the show is these songs, both the unpublished ones and those already made known by artists such as Teresa Berganza or Victoria de los Ángeles. Songs which Ian Gibson contextualizes in different periods of Lorca's life so as to provide a more intimate approach to the Granadian poet. A Federico who was fascinated by the figure of Mariana Pineda, whom he could see every day from his home window in his youth. Parallel to his poetic, literary and theatrical work, he began his research into popular songs and ballads. Alongside Falla, he delved into flamenco, its music and lyrics, which allowed him to discover his deepest poetic self, alongside the gypsy community that surrounded him in his hometown of Fuente Vaqueros.

MARÍA GALIANA - Interpreter

Born in Seville in 1935, she earned a degree in Philosophy and Letters before beginning her fruitful career as an art history teacher in several high schools in her hometown.

In the 1950s, her acting vocation was awakened thanks to her participation in various university theater groups, although her first professional role for the cinema was in 1988 in Pasodoble, directed by José Luis García Sánchez. After that role, she appeared in films such as Malaventura (Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, 1988), Belle Époque (Fernando Trueba, 1992), Así en el cielo como en la tierra (José Luis Cuerda, 1995), Libertarias (Vicente Aranda, 1996), and Yerma (Pilar Távora, 1998), before her life took a turn with the new millennium.

She made her theatrical debut in 1990 with El amor de don Perimplín, by Federico García Lorca, and participated in La casa de Bernarda Alba under the direction of Amelia Ochandiano (1992), and directed by Juan Echanove in La asamblea de mujeres, by Aristophanes, among others.

In 1999, a few months before her retirement as a teacher, Solas, the debut film of Benito Zambrano, was released. That drama about loneliness, poverty, and stifled dreams earned her the Goya Award for Best Supporting Actress, and her moving performance made her an unforgettable face of Spanish cinema. After that film, she has appeared in movies such as Fugitivas (Miguel Hermoso, 2000), Roma (Adolfo Aristarain, 2004), María querida (José Luis García Sánchez, 2005), and Tapas (Juan Cruz and José Corbacho, 2005).

Her popularity skyrocketed in September 2001, when TVE premiered the first episode of the series Cuéntame cómo pasó, where she has played the beloved grandmother Herminia in the longest-running series in the history of Spanish television ever since.

Medal of Andalusia in 2000, Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture in 2004, she has received other awards such as the Ondas in 1999, the award for Best Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival (2000), the Union of Actors for Best Supporting Actress (2001), and the Cinematographic Prize Familia (Olas de Oro) for her human and professional career in the field of cinema.
