"Soul Couplets" (verse that gives title to a poem by San Juan de la Cruz) is a subjective and arbitrary, non-academic journey through the great authors of Spanish literature from the 16th century to the present.
San Juan de la Cruz, Santa Teresa de Jesús, Lorca, Machado, Miguel Hernández... Love and its experience, in the immense variety of its manifestations, are decisive in human existence, expressing a longing to transcend the limits of our individuality, to project ourselves onto the other, to merge and become one with them. Love is a complex experience that often proves ineffable, resisting rational analysis and giving rise to the most beautiful texts throughout history.
With Víctor Carbajo's piano in the background, actor Emilio Gutiérrez Caba unfolds the poems while baritone Luis Santana accompanies the verses with songs selected according to the author and the era.
The chosen poems form an emotional, philosophical, humorous, social journey...

“We are pleased to have brought to Roses an actor of the prestige of Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, because it has been a magnificent recital, a great show that we have been able to enjoy tonight at the Municipal Theater,” said the Councilor for Culture, Èric Ibáñez.

And that's because I must correct my prejudices, since it wasn't a recital. The verses weren't recited, but performed with an overwhelming passion, an intimate joy and, above all, a fierce expressiveness.

Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, one of the great names of the Spanish stage, lends his voice to the poems of Miguel Hernández this Saturday in Huesca, at the midpoint of the Olimpia Classic Classical Theatre Festival (20:30). The show 'Dejadme la esperanza' is a tribute to the Alicante author, in which baritone Luis Santana and pianist Víctor Carbajo also participate.
