Emilio Gutiérrez Caba - Coplas del Alma

'Coplas of the Soul'

"Soul Couplets" (verse that gives title to a poem by San Juan de la Cruz) is a subjective and arbitrary, non-academic journey through the great authors of Spanish literature from the 16th century to the present.

San Juan de la Cruz, Santa Teresa de Jesús, Lorca, Machado, Miguel Hernández... Love and its experience, in the immense variety of its manifestations, are decisive in human existence, expressing a longing to transcend the limits of our individuality, to project ourselves onto the other, to merge and become one with them. Love is a complex experience that often proves ineffable, resisting rational analysis and giving rise to the most beautiful texts throughout history.

With Víctor Carbajo's piano in the background, actor Emilio Gutiérrez Caba unfolds the poems while baritone Luis Santana accompanies the verses with songs selected according to the author and the era.

The chosen poems form an emotional, philosophical, humorous, social journey...

EMILIO GUTIÉRREZ CABA - Interpreter

An acclaimed actor in film, theater, and television, he comes from one of the most recognized family dynasties in the field of acting. He was born during a theater tour; his entire family has always been dedicated to theater and film, so his childhood and adolescence unfolded in an environment that shaped his artistic vocation.
He boasts a five-decade artistic career, with performances both on stage and in front of the cameras of film and television. His professional acting career began in 1962 when he embarked on his first tour with the company of actress Lili Murati, until 1968 when he formed his own company with María José Goyanes.

Since 1963, he has combined his work in theater with notable contributions to the world of cinema, where he has appeared in over 80 films, including standout titles such as *The Community* by Álex de la Iglesia, for which he won the Goya Award for "Best Supporting Actor" in 2001, and repeated the accolade the following year with Miguel Albadalejo’s *The Open Sky*.

Since 1979, he has premiered works by classical authors such as Gil Vicente, Calderón, Shakespeare, Joyce, and Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, and has continued to perform in pieces by contemporary writers like Álvaro del Amo, Jorge Díaz, Fermín Cabal, and Juan García Larrondo. In 1996, he played the character of Don Diego in *The Yes of the Maidens* by Moratín, and in 1998, he premiered a play that toured Spain for nearly four seasons: *The Woman in Black*.

In 2003, he premiered *The Prince and the Showgirl* at the theater, co-starring with María Adánez, and in 2008, the play *Death and the Maiden*, alongside Luisa Martín.

Emilio Gutiérrez Caba has been a staunch advocate for culture and the arts; among other cultural activities, he participated in the 1987 International Poetry Biennial, where he recited a series of poems alongside other Spanish artists. Additionally, he has expanded his professional repertoire to include writing short stories and screenplays, as well as preparing a family biography.

And that's because I must correct my prejudices, since it wasn't a recital. The verses weren't recited, but performed with an overwhelming passion, an intimate joy and, above all, a fierce expressiveness.
