Ainhoa Arteta - Dos divas y un barítono

Two Divas and a Baritone

After many years since they last shared the stage at the Berlin Opera, two of the most internationally acclaimed voices in Spanish lyric music come together once again for a beautiful recital alongside the Zamoran baritone Luis Santana and the pianist Víctor Carbajo.

In "Two Divas and a Baritone", Ainhoa Arteta and Montserrat Martí Caballé present a magnificent programme featuring highlights from opera and zarzuela. The repertoire includes three excerpts from Verdi's La Traviata, as well as works by Donizetti, Rossini, Mozart, Obradors, Falla, Penella, Giménez, Serrano and Torroba.

Their reunion took place in January 2023 at the Jesús López Cobos International Classical Music Festival, brought together by Luis Santana. On that occasion, the audience enjoyed not only three exceptional voices, but also the warmth, friendship and remarkable chemistry shared by these outstanding artists and longtime friends.

Making her debut as Mimì in Puccini's La Bohème is no easy feat—especially when it takes place on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York. Yet Ainhoa Arteta achieved it with outstanding success. This remarkable debut, together with winning the Concours International de Voix d'Opéra in Paris, marked the beginning of a brilliant international career.

The list of prestigious venues where she has performed is truly impressive: the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Covent Garden, Bayerische Staatsoper, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Musikverein in Vienna, La Scala in Milan, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Arena di Verona, Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the Royal Opera House in London, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, among many others. These appearances have allowed her to portray leading roles in some of opera's greatest masterpieces, including La Traviata, La Bohème, Roméo et Juliette, Manon Lescaut, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Adriana Lecouvreur, and La Wally.

Among the highlights of her career are her performances in Cyrano de Bergerac alongside Plácido Domingo at the San Francisco Opera and the Teatro Real, La Bohème at both the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala, Otello in A Coruña, Turandot, Carmen, and La Bohème at the Liceu, Dialogues des Carmélites, Eugene Onegin, and Simon Boccanegra with ABAO, the Paris premiere of the opera Le dernier jour d'un condamné, Don Carlo at the Oviedo Opera, and Don Giovanni at the Teatro Real, among many others.

However, Ainhoa Arteta has never sought to limit herself exclusively to the operatic stage. She has also developed an extensive recital and concert career, collaborating with distinguished conductors such as Sir Neville Marriner, Christian Badea, and Pablo González, as well as renowned pianists including Marco Evangelisti, Rubén Fernández Aguirre, Malcolm Martineau, and Javier Carmena.

Montserrat Martí made her operatic debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Zerlina in Don Giovanni, earning immediate critical acclaim. Die Welt described her performance as "a delightful Zerlina," while Hamburger Anzeigen und Nachrichten praised her as "a Zerlina with a pure and solid soprano voice." Das Opernglas highlighted her as "the main attraction of the evening... a remarkable Zerlina, a young soprano with a well-projected voice and a solid technique." Following this success, she returned to Hamburg for further performances of Don Giovanni.

She made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Liù in Turandot, a performance celebrated by the Spanish press as "the birth of a star" (La Vanguardia, 29 October 1999) and "the birth of a new diva" (ABC, 28 October 1999).

A former ballet student of the legendary Maya Plisetskaya, Montserrat Martí combined her dance training with musical and vocal studies. She has also participated in numerous charity concerts, including the Solidarity Concert for Rwanda at the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca in the presence of H.M. Queen Sofía of Spain, the Hampton Court Festival in support of the Royal Collection Trust under the patronage of the then Prince of Wales, and a benefit concert for the Olga Havel Foundation in Prague, dedicated to supporting children with disabilities.

She has performed in the UNESCO Grand Hall in Paris under the baton of Zubin Mehta, and has appeared in concerts and recitals throughout Europe at prestigious venues including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Musikhalle Hamburg, Musikverein Vienna, Salle Gaveau Paris, the Peralada International Music Festival, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and the Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre in Saint Petersburg.

Montserrat Martí has also performed Mozart's Requiem under the direction of Sir Neville Marriner and has collaborated with Vangelis in both recordings and live performances, exploring the crossover repertoire.

Born in Zamora, Spain, baritone Luis Santana began his musical studies at the age of five. Throughout his artistic development, he has trained with distinguished teachers including Juana Peñalver, Consuelo Barrio, María Teresa Manzano, and Miguel Zanetti, and currently continues his vocal studies under the guidance of the eminent Spanish tenor Pedro Lavirgen and the legendary mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza.

He has performed in many of Spain's most prestigious theatres and concert halls, including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid, the Juan March Foundation, the Auditorio de Zaragoza, the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, the Teatro Principal of Alicante, the Teatro Cervantes of Málaga, the Miguel Delibes Cultural Centre and Calderón Theatre in Valladolid, the Romea Theatre in Murcia, the León Auditorium, the Prince of Asturias Foundation, the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, and many other renowned venues throughout Spain.

His international career has taken him to cities such as Rome, Paris, Milan, Naples, Budapest, Toulon, Bucharest, Donetsk, Iași, Brașov, Lviv, Ruse, Riga, Porto, Lisbon, Vienna, and Eisenach.

Luis Santana has worked with an impressive roster of conductors, including García, Roa, Frizzi, Osa, Wilson, Alapont, Lencko, Vasilencko, Diadura, Monsalve, Abelló, Sainz Alfaro, Ortega, Popa, Mesa, and Todorov, among many others.

He has also taken part in a tribute to Ainhoa Arteta at the Auditorium of Lleida and toured with the celebrated actress and singer Nati Mistral and the late Paco Valladares, performing programmes devoted to Spanish poetry. Other notable appearances include the opening of the Otoño Musical Soriano Festival under the baton of Odón Alonso, the Robles de Laciana Festival with pianist Rosa Torres-Pardo, the Úbeda International Festival, and concerts at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, among many others.
